POST-PRODUCTION

For the background music, I chose two different songs. As my film opening has two locations, I will use one song at the beginning with the shots located in the house and the other song in the forest. For the start,  I selected the out-of-time song. It is a calm piano song that will help establish the location and the character, Lucy. This will hleppresent her as a nice, quiet and tranquil girl. As every part in the song has a similar beat, I was able to cut it and blend it with the second song. For the forest I chose “AQUI”. It is a song which shocks you the first time you hear it and successfully creates the mood of terror and tension. Without this going, the shots on the forest would not have an impact on the audience. I chose this specific song because when I hear it creates confusion, bewilderment and especially suspense. It portrays the other girls personality as dangerous, wild and murderous. The difference between both of the songs represents te difference between the girls personalities.

FOLEY

I have created a few diegetic sounds to include in my film opening. These will help the audience understand what's happening on screen and create tension, suspense, and excitement. For my first shot, as the camera was quite far away from the action, I decided to take just the sound of the door opening and closing. When editing I will substitute this audio with the original one to make sure it can be clearly heard. This is keen as it emphasizes someone is getting out of the car. I also created a separate diegetic sound of the clock, to make sure this sound stands out in the scenes taking place in the kitchen. This audio is quite long because I want it to go all along a few shots as if I cut it and add another one, it will be noticed by the audience. In both of the shots where the silhouette of the girl is reflected in the wall and the movement of the curtains can be seen in the bedroom, I will add a diegetic sound of the wind.

This is not an original sound I was able to produce therefore I downloaded it from the internet. I could not include the original sound of these shots because to make the curtains move I had to use a hairdryer. The noise that can be heard from the original sound does not match with the on-screen action. In the second part of the film opening, located in the forest, I only had to create an extra sound. I decided to take the sound of footsteps and tight breathing while I was running at a low pace. I included this sound in several shots to add tension and stress. I also decided to include it at the end when the title of the film appears. All of these diegetic sounds help the film opening to be more intense and the audience to understand what’s happening.

EDITING

After researching different editing software available to edit my film opening, I chose to use premiere pro. It is a professional-level editing software, therefore it took me a long time to learn how to use it. Once I learned everything, I was able to edit my video quickly, adding a wide variety of effects and transitions. I took a few screen recording videos to show some sections of my editing process.

The first video shows the effects I used to create the title of my film. I had to change the color of the letters as my original title had the letters in black, but this did not match the conventions of my genre.

As there was no video transition that created the flickering effect, I had to watch a tutorial and create it myself. I did this by randomly changing the position of the title. I also added a blur effect to catch the audience’s attention. The title of SE7EN inspired the title for my film.

In the shot where my protagonist is laid down in bed, I wanted to create an effect of discomfort and confusion, representing that she is changing personalities. I got two shots that are practically the same and combined them together. In one of them, I added a red filter to connote danger. I joined both shots by changing the opacity. I really like the effect it creates as it highlights the protagonist’s confused feelings and thoughts. In the forest, I wanted to create disorientation in the viewer. I did this by increasing the velocity of the shots in which the environment can be seen. This highlights her confused mind. I was not planning to do this, therefore I had to improvise and use a few videos I had taken of the forest the day of my shooting.

When I finally finished joining all the shots required and the music, I noticed an error. The shots where the clock and the phone appear did not have the same time. I could not make this change in premier pro, therefore I had to repeat the shots. In this video you can see how I implemented the new shots when everything else was assembled and edited. I also added subtitles because the text messages were not legible. I have also included a video of editing the logo of my production company. When I saw it finished I thought it was too simple, therefore I repeated it. The one I will use has the same typography and logo but with a different background.

I have learned a lot of new things by using premiere pro, and now that I understand all the tools and options available, I will be able to create higher quality and professional videos. I have really enjoyed the editing process.

OLd verSIONS OF MY FILM OPENING

These are some old versions of my video. There is a lot of difference in between each video, which shows the progress and the changes that I made.
