COLOR PALETTE

To create my color palette I got inspiration both from Vertigo and Parallel Mothers:

VERTIGO :

Hitchcock uses the complementary colours of red and green in Vertigo to create visual interest and direct contrast between the two. Taking advantage of that popular duo of red and green, the color green is used to represent death, mystery, and terror, while red expresses alarming danger, lust, and obsession. Though a majority of the film takes place in lovely neutrals, the use of glowing minty greens takes its qualities to new heights.

One of the most prominent uses of these complementary colours is in Ernie’s:

It shows the strong visual impact created by the emerald green against the intense red, making the audience to focus directly to the most contrasting figure. Different emotions are evoked based on the intensity of either colour.

When similar colours are used in Scottie’s home it effuses a sense of comfort:

By toning down and desaturating the basic red and green colour scheme, Hitchcock creates a warmer, more intimate and inviting atmosphere. It allows the scene to feel more naturalistic and accommodating of

the two characters.

PARALLEL MOTHERS :

There is an abundant exchange of colors throughout the entire projection. Yellow intersects with green during the interaction of both mothers. We see how at first yellow and bright colors are attached to the character of Penelope, while greenish tones and cold colors join Milena, in her most bewildered stage. Subsequently, this evolution changes and the colors that were part of one character become part of another character. The combination of red and green creates a controvery and an unseatleing imagery. It catches the audiences attention.

GREGORY CREWDSON :

Gregory Crewdson’s surreal images are often melancholic, offering ambiguous narrative suggestions and blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality. Most of the photographs contain cool dark blues in the air with streaks of warm colors appearing throughout the images. These colors intensify the drama of each subject. I have inspired myself from this photographer as I wanted to tackle the themes of solitude and isolation, just like him. I really like the way he implements complementary colors in his images such as red and green.
