This was my first time using the website of render forest to create a whiteboard annimated video. In the mise-en-scene explanation of my film I included setting and props, costume and make-up, facial expressions and body language and the positioning of my characters.
I also analysed the mise-en-scene of one of the scenes of split:
It is located in a dark basement. As it is cut off from civilization and any form of help, it creates a tense and fearsome atmosphere. Basements are always places that are seldom-visited, increasing the audience's tension and fear while watching this scene. In this scene no props can be seen. This makes the audience focus on the characters actions and dialogue, rather than on insignificant objects. Hedwig is wearing a bright yellow coat. This color symbolizes hope, positivity and warmth. However the victims are wearing neutral coloured clothes. As
these colors do not stand out, the viewer focuses on Hedwig. Body language and facial expressions are used to portray the fear the characters feel on-screen. The facial expression of the two girls located at the back reflects fear and panic. Their body position is thrown backwards, trying to get as far away as possible from the kidnapper. It portrays desperation and tension. Hedwig's facial expression is of happiness. It emphasizes he is a kid. He is sitting unconcerned against the door frame, making the audience understand he is not the victim. The protagonist, Casey, has a relaxed facial expression. Her body position is leaning forward a little trying to portray a sense of comfort and security. She expresses herself with soft and fluid movement. This is contradictory as this is a moment of stress and tension.
The hair and makeup of the girls is well combed representing that the girls are careful and conceited with their appearance. The lighting is dark and atmospheric emphasizing the theme of horror. We can see that in the basement it is dark , however outside there is a lot more light representing freedom and liberty. It creates tension due to its mysterious and dark atmosphere. The use of black and whie colors transcend the horror genre itself.
