WHAT IS A DIGIPAK
In the early 200s, Digipak style cases became popular amongst record labels and recording artists. The Digipak / Digibook case is a patented style or format of packaging of compact discs (CDs) and DVDs. They were the first alternative to jewel cases to be used by major record companies. Digipak style packaging is usually used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums. They are self contained and protect the disc better than traditional jewel cases. Digipak can be covered with graphics inside and out, making them more visually interesting than traditional cases, which only feature paper inserts and booklets.
Digipak is used by record labels to promote the sales of the artist, in the same way the video does. Its features give the audience multiple reasons to buy the CD rather than just downloading content off iTunes. They can vary in shape and size but will generally consist of either 4 or 6 panels. It also commonly includes a DVD, a lyric book, artist photos or imagery and a list of songs.
Purposes of a Digipak
To simply protect the album and inner contents
To advertise the contents in a more creative/eye-catching way
To reflect the principles/attitudes etc. of the record label and artist
To boost sales and enhance profit
Looks attractive in retail units - draws the audience in (the front and back covers are most important as these are the sides that the consumer will see first )
